“This box has been in my family for over 100 years now. My great-grandfather found it during World War I while hiding in an abandoned castle in the middle of Europe after escaping from a German prison camp. It was concealed in a wall of the castle behind a loose stone, and there it might have remained but for the end of the war and my great-grandfather’s rescue by friendly troops. He brought the box home as a souvenir.”
“Over the years, I have tried to find a key that would open this lock, and after much frustration, I finally succeeded in my quest. So…I know what is in the box, and it is amazing. I’d like to conduct a little experiment to see if one of you can unlock the secrets held within.”
Five spectators each select at random one image of a middle-ages scientist, on the back of which is a description of their contribution to the scientific community, along with a single key word. Each spectator then selects a key at random, only one of which will open the lock on an old box. When the box is opened, a cryptex is found. When the right key word is applied to the cryptex, it opens, revealing a message inside which validates the contribution made by the scientist previously selected by the spectator whose key opened the box.
